| D12-46. SUPERB CRAFTSMANSHIP! A daguerreotypist in his studio had total control of the light when he captured this subject on an archivally sealed quarter plate. Not only was the gent, who had a nasty scar near his mouth, perfectly rendered, but check out the ebb and flow of the dappled tones behind the guy! I can sense some of you stopping your reading of my narrative about now because the oxidation has encroached on the subject's head and is oozing towards him from both sides. Well, his flesh was tinted (and cleaning certainly would have removed that while also exposing mat scrapes near the brass oval). The horizontal marks on the right were part of the plate's preparation. The fellow's dapper attire is rather eye-catching don't you think? What has me completely stumped is the object that was stuffed in the slash pocket of his jacket. At first glance, I thought it was a handkerchief, but looking at my scan and the blow-up gives me pause. Those are definitely printed letters but what do they say? There are also a few mold mites on the silver plus several deep buff marks across his chest. The decoration on the remaining half of the leather case compartment is rather unique. $295 |
