D8-113. A GENTLEMAN who had acquired modest wealth, reaching an elderly age would certainly be expected to have a fine sixth plate daguerreotype taken. So, that is what the unidentified old man from Exeter, NH, did. He probably went to Boston (with other members of his family) to have his likeness captured on the lustrous surface of this resealed piece. The unknown shooter selected a classic bust pose for his client and chose overhead light to emphasize the man's craggy face. A hint of the chair post and the fellow's shoulders provides a solid horizontal foundation for his old weather-beaten head. The mussed white hair probably flew wildly when he removed an unseen hat. A couple swipes with his hand slightly tamed the unruly mane! His clear blue eyes continuously watched the cameraman's performance. The delightful dag has marvelous patina and tones. The reflected depth resembles the old man, hale and hardy. One brown dot (on the lapel) and a few shiny flecks are visible. The worn, leather case is apart. $195
