| EEW-196. DOUBLE TAKE! Sometimes when it's hot, humid and hazy and I'm walking aimlessly in the dusty fields, masquerading as places where antique dealers displays their items for sale, I might miss certain elements of fine quarter plate dags with new archival seals. When Erin handed me a stack of portraits that she purchased from a vendor I IMMEDIATELY was drawn to this couple and especially those awesome two-toned unmatching pieces of fabric deftly sewn together (maybe by the subdued lady on the gent's left) that he wore for their likeness. Was that guy a grouch, unhappy about the price of the results, or what? You know folks, trousers come and trousers go but this example is the finest I have seen in years!!! Notice that he wore a pinky ring while the woman's band, highlighted with gold like the rest of her jewelry, was not a token of wedded bliss since she displayed it on a finger next to her thumb. The pair is intriguing, to say the least. Those streaks behind them are part of the cloth background. There are tiny mold spiders near the oval opening and one area of decay easily seen above the couple. While the tonality seems flat the contrast and depth are actually quite good. The nice complete leather case has an unmarked red silk pad inside and a common floral theme. $210 |
