This photo postcard draws attention to the history of slavery in New England. The caption, written in the negative and thus printed on the card, suggests the image could have been made for tourists and mass-production. A photo on the Dorchester Atheneum’s website was made from the same negative, without the text.

Only three of the stones are present today and they are also in a different order than when the photo was taken in the early 20th century.
The card is in very good condition but has some edge silvering and fade, especially at the lower right. You can read three of the four stones easily.Â
