The woman’s daguerreotypist handed his client a mother of pearl case to hold while she was seated.  Her wrist rested on a book that had been placed upon a coverlet over a small wooden table.  The retaped sixth plate actually has better visibility inside a complete leather case then I was able to reproduce.  Selected pigments were painted on every surface except for the sliver of chair and the background.  Oxidation naturally added more color to the likeness.  The line above the subject’s head was a piece of dust adhered to the silver.  There are several diagonal marks to the right of her head that were there on the day she was taken, circa 1851.  There is also a bubble in the glass in the same location.  The tarnish is rather funky in places inside the mat.
