TAKEN AT BRADY’S! I have seen several dags with ?Hayes NY? and ?J. S. Brown NY? etched in the lower right corner of dags. Hayes worked for Brady prior to 1849, then with James Sydney Brown, who was Brady?s chief operator, circa 1842-1848, at Brown?s gallery after they both departed Brady?s NYC operations. This gent probably was taken in 1847. See the second scan for a close up of the Hays signature. The prominent gent had style that was fully revealed in his resealed quarter plate that has amazing reflected depth. The specks on the portrait and the patina aren?t much of a distraction. The next owner will enjoy communing with the man when his full leather case is opened.
