I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ambrotype identified as being taken at night, but surely it was possible, especially if the moon was bright and there was all that snow to bounce light off of. My point being, doesn’t this moody quarter plate ambrotype feel like it’s a night image?  The other weird thing are those giant logs stacked and shaped to look like asparagus spears (the first thing I though of). Of course, there is a pair of sawhorses in the foreground so I assume the logs were there for firewood purposes. I keep coming back to the figure though. Without him, the image wouldn’t be nearly as compelling. It comes in a case with a repaired spine. The ambro has some discoloration in the emulsion that you see more in the scan than in person. I have not cleaned the glass on this one.
