WHERE WAS HE TAKEN? Casey and I have examined many fine daguerreotypes with “Chase” imprinted on the brass mats. We usually ascertain that either Ezra or Lorenzo, two brothers born in Kensington NH, were the operators. The placement of this white column and the very unusual pose the fellow struck when he was taken on a fine resealed quarter plate daguerreotype has caused both of us to wonder which brother was responsible. We believe the handsome gent was taken circa 1851-1853. Lorenzo left his gallery in Boston to travel west and was in partnership with C. F. Hamilton in San Francisco circa 1852. By 1854 Lorenzo had returned to Boston. Ezra was operating in Lowell MA when the fellow posed for his portrait. We haven?t seen another subject wearing that specific headgear in a dag. The reversed “3” pinned to his neckerchief was painted with gold. The symbolism of the digit remains a mystery. The overall quality and condition of the likeness is superb. The complete leather case is very worn and the cover is stained in the lower right corner.
