I am 99% certain that Joseph Cutter’s ID is in the incorrect case, as the younger man of the three dags offered here is not old enough to be Cutter (1777-1860). Cutter would have been about 67 when the dag was made. The pin holding it there is new as well. According to information about the Old Burying Ground in Jaffrey found online, Cutter and his wife Phoebe (1779-1871) built the largest home in Jaffrey, “The Ark” to house their family of eight children. It is still standing. My dad bought these dags together years ago because they were early (Joseph and Phoebe’s have paper mats and come in unusual early cases) and kept them, I think, because they were from NH. The Cutter pair, most likely made the same day, each have a smattering of mold spiders on the surface. Joseph’s image is a bit better made, suggesting an itinerant who may have still been getting the hang of things. The younger, unknown man’s image has some tarnish and green spots and is also a bit primitive looking for a c1844 image. Look how narrow his shoulders are! He comes in a grecian urn case. Each dag is resealed.
